Treasure Hunt at Salsipuedes

When I first moved here, I heard stories about two eccentric ladies who lived on my property years ago. I was told they acted very strangely, ran and hid when people came by, etc. There were rumors that they had buried their money. For some time now I have wanted to find someone with a metal detector and search for the "treasure". 

Well, the "special man in my life" told me he had one! We made plans to search the property but never seemed to find time. When he mentioned that his granddaughters were coming this weekend for a visit, I suggested that they might like to hunt for the treasure. 

So Saturday, a crisp  fall day, they came over and we set to work.

Soon they were hard at work! The metal detector found something in the first spot I had suggested!

Even though we tried several other places, our search only turned up "junk". Oh, well, maybe next time. There is still a lot of ground to cover!! I haven't given up yet.

A Lesson From a Grandchild

I had a return visit from my number 2 grandson last week--just in the nick of time! The heat was really getting to me and it was getting more difficult every day to get my outside work done. But help arrived!! My 12 year old (soon to be 13) grandson stayed for a week and did all the heavy work for me. And taught me something besides! I kept watching him while he was working--he made it seem so much fun! What was his secret? Finally it dawned on me--he was totally living in the moment--while I am always thinking ahead to what I need to do next, he was "enjoying the moment."

He was up early every morning to feed the horses, give them fresh water and clean two paddocks. Of course it helped that Rufus jumped on the bed and licked him "good morning".

He has a way with animals. He was able to make friends with my cats--they don't come to anyone but me. Of course Moe was his best buddy, waiting patiently by the fence for him to put on his halter so he could get a little green grass in the yard. Unlike Bochica, who walked off from me every time he saw me with the halter.

Bochica  stood politely and lifted his feet (without a halter) for him to check his feet for sweetgum balls.

Of course both horses are "treat hounds".

When I asked him to spread bird seed, he even made that fun. I think I'll try this next time!

We also did fun stuff--movies, museum, baking cookies, etc. It's always more fun with a grandchild.  He went home on Sunday, and it sure is quiet here now! Number 2 grandson, thanks for a wonderful week! Hope you don't grow up too quickly!

Hurrah for grandchildren--I always laugh a lot and enjoy life more when they are around! Who knows, maybe I'll learn yet how to "enjoy the moment".

Grandchildren at Salsipuedes

It's always so much fun when my grandchildren visit! Looking at nature through a child's eyes is an adventure. This year the first visitors were my older son, his two children and one of his nephews--what a delight--three grandchildren at once! The two little ones are soon to be 6 and already 7 and the oldest is soon to be 13.

Despite the 100+ days, we stayed busy outside. Even though they were tired in the mornings, they all got up bleary eyed and helped me feed and muck.

Of course we had to pay a visit to the pond--this time we fished for crawfish! What fun--I learned a few things about catching them.

They also helped with the container garden-picking and watering.

My number two grandson even cooked breakfast for us one morning--his famous omlets. Delicious!

A big hit with my youngest grandson was a bow and arrow set from the local "dollar store". He demonstrated  his technique for his great-grandmother.

We kept hearing the pileated woodpecker, but couldn't manage to see it. Finally, my youngest grandson and I set out walking and finally saw it flying over us.

Poor Rufus--he didn't sleep much--just had to see what the kiddos were doing every minute!

My number one grandson., who is 16,  didn't arrive until the next week, just in time for my brother's famous July 4th family reunion! More on that on another post! Stay tuned!!
